How to Identify the Correct Toilet Flush Valve

To identify a replacement toilet flush valve, start with the cistern design and operating method. A similar-looking valve may still differ in outlet size, height, button connection or seal arrangement.

Check how the toilet flushes

  • Push button: note whether the button operates directly, through rods or by cable.
  • Handle or lever: the cistern may use a syphon rather than a drop valve.
  • Dual flush: record the existing button and valve arrangement rather than assuming any dual-flush valve will fit.

Measure the important dimensions

  1. Measure or identify the cistern outlet connection.
  2. Check the available height inside the cistern.
  3. Note the button-hole position and diameter where relevant.
  4. Check cable length or rod arrangement.
  5. Inspect the seating washer or seal and the way the valve locks into the outlet.

Confirm the fault before replacing the valve

Water running into the pan can be caused by a worn flush-valve seal, a valve that is not seating correctly, or a fill valve set above the overflow level. A weak flush can also have other causes. Inspect the existing mechanism before deciding what to replace.

Flush valve or syphon?

A drop valve lifts to release water through the cistern outlet. A traditional syphon uses siphonic action and is commonly operated by a handle. Identify the existing mechanism and operating method before ordering.
